Silkyway's origin cannot be traced back to a design studio but to the quiet chambers of a family home in Kerala. An innate fondness for fabrics led to a deep exploration of how sarees were crafted, dyed, and worn. This further led to first collecting intricately designed sarees across the land, far and wide.
The passion for collecting quickly turned to the art of draping. Shanti quickly experimented and attempted new styles on herself and others. This desire for perfect weaves and drapes led to going deeper into the making of these sarees and fabrics. Handpicking the best fabrics and weavers to craft a small set of personal yet luxurious sarees. She tried to capture the beauty around her to the sarees in front of her. Technique and artistry followed suit.
Started to dress herself and close family, the passion project soon garnered word of mouth. What began in quiet devotion soon found a voice, carried softly from one heart to another, growing with every thread, every whispered praise.
Slowly expanded to take requests from close circles and friends. Two cupboards inside her room formed the first shop floor while the floors on which she sketched became the first design studio of Silkyway. And then, the store took form—not as a beginning, but as a continuation of a journey started in 1996.
The decision to go fully digital was a decision, intentionally delayed. The desire to emulate this passion project into as close a physical experience as possible. To be as close an experience as how it started in the cupboard where the initial customers shopped from. A truly handcrafted experience as you pick the next addition to your family heirloom of sarees.
To this day, Silkway remains what it always was: a heartfelt pursuit, wrapped in silk and soul. A Project of Passion
